Aimed to launch in March, 2012.
The car stop program was first implemented in this region on Pender Island and has been a major success for the community. The car stops on Quadra Island will provide a safe and DOT approved pullout for cars to voluntarily pick up community members who choose to use the car stop. The signs are a reflective and highway grade material, mounted on a felspar post with rivets, then installed into a sleeve that is cemented into the ground. To effectively make the project work in phase 1, there will be approximately 37 signs from the south end of the island, and stretching as far north as the telephone booth at the Village Bay Lakes area. The premise is to improve the accessibility of island travel for the residents of Quadra, while minimizing environmental impact from vehicle pollution, and helping the quadra economy during tourism season. There is significant community support for this project, which was initiated and organized by the Quadra Transition Island Community. www.quadraisland.ca/transition
